Eurovision Excitement
Eurovision Excitement!
I like the Eurovision Song Contest. Not in a kitsch so-bad-it's-good way, I really like it. I haven't seen it for years, because I have no TV, and none of my friends seem to share my enthusiasm. This time, for sure! And it's in Estonia this year! Hoorah for Estonia!
In recent years there have been so many countries eligible that it is no longer practical for all of them to compete each year. Instead the lowest scoring countries get to take a year out, and are replaced by the lowest scorers from the time before.
Iceland and Norway are relegated this year (they got 3 points each last year, were they really that bad!?), along with Portugal, the Netherlands, Latvia, Poland and astonishingly Ireland, who once looked invincible.
For a while it was compulsory to sing in a recognised Official Language of your country, but not any more. So a lot of the songs will be undoubtedly be in English, which is the international language of popular music, too.
But the Danes, at least, have stuck with their native language (hoorah!); the song is "Vis mig, hvem du er" ["show me who you are", at a guess, but I could be wrong.] Note that the songs already chosen are available at the site above, if you have a lifetime to spare downloading them.
Most countries (including the UK) haven't chosen yet. In fact, I
think I may have to have an ongoing Eurovision Corner, to keep my,
ahem, many and varied readers up to date.
